Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art from the aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to literature, theatre, and art. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just an elementary school student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence for a specific Jury member. As a result of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective.
